i have done a fair few rips in the past just using my laptop and an open
source program..
my method was to use a dvd recorder to record it (to the built in hard drive)
and then i would rip it to dvd and then dvd-avi
i never ever had a problem with sync issues or pixellation.
i'm assuming though these rips are probably done using media centre pc's are
they being recorded/captured to divx on the fly or are they also ripping to hd
mpg and then down-converting to divx??
is it during the capturing / recording process that the sync occurs or during
the divx conversion?
if this is the case it seems these media centre pc's are more trouble than
they are worth. i cant see me ever getting a media centre pc, i would prefer a
proper component unit which is built specific for its task and you dont have
to wait for it to bootup, and relying on windows o/s etc..
the reason things get out of sync is that everything is geared toward maximum
speed. sure, any half decent capper can make sync'd files if given time, but
when corners are being cut left, right and center (can you have a corner in the
centre? i don't think you can... but i digress) then this sort of thing happens.
as for problems with the file being posted so quickly, it's hardly surprising
considering the glitch happens in the first couple of minutes of the show.
anyone with a fast connection, who jumped straight on either eztv's torrent or a
private tracker torrent, could have had the file and started watching it within
5 or 6 minutes. another 2 minutes to get to the glitch and voila, the glitch
can be reported within 7 or 8 minutes of the torrent release.
of course if the glitch was in the last 2 minutes, it would take longer to get
reported.
1) there will be a proper released by one group or another at some point
2) that eztv will not distribute the proper - because it's not worth the hassle
considering the sync issue is apparently only during the 'previously on...'
segment anyway
3) there will not be a syncfix file since nobody will go to the trouble for a
small glitch during the 'previously on...' segment.
i reiterate though... these are only my guesses. 🙂

thanks for the explanation, really helps!
anyone know if another will be posted??
i remember ages ago this happened and someone was able to post a small 300kb
patch file which fixed the sync issues, would this be done again?
thanks i didnt realise the out of sync was only on the previously on... bit
i didnt read it properly and i thought it was in the actual episode itself..
ok so no worries about that i can definitely live with..
its funny though there was a time where people would complain about glitches
because of stupid reasons like it shows 3 seconds of a commercial, or it
pixellates for 0.2 of a second etc
and i remember wars going on and people getting anal about this and demanding
re-release..
glad to see this has now stopped and bandwidth can stop being wasted on stupid
errors which in no way detract from the viewing experience..
hehe - believe me, the stupid nukes haven't stopped. eztv and vtv will usually
ignore nukes that are stupid though. for example, yesterday's cold case was
nuked and proper'd because the first release had 44,100hz audio instead of
48,000hz. vtv elected not to release the proper, i hope nobody's viewing
experience was ruined by missing out on those 3,900hz of audio frequency! 😉 🙂
i hate those 'previously on prison break' bits anyway.
who in their right mind would download and watch s02e07 without having
previously watched every episode before it?
i can understand the purpose of these little snippets for people watching shows
on tv as they air, but when you're downloading them and watching them it's just
a waste of bandwidth.
its just about bearable when you're watching one ep at a time as they are
airing, but it drives me crazy if i'm catching up on a previously aired show in
one big chunk.
"previously, on the show you were just watching a minute ago".
/rant
not that i don't appreciate all the hard work, obviously. :-)

peace out
the thing about glitches:
whenever you burn the xvid onto a dvd and try to play it in a stand alone dvd
player. the glitch affects the file and it goes out of whack for about 30
seconds. (or atleast it does on mine.)
