720 p now
[#170615] Written by: BakaHammer [07/11/2011, 08:41]
the only 720p version i've seen so far for this episode was close to 2gb in size.

just what the heck is going on with the scene boys nowadays? hd files of completely random size,
real/proper/repacks each and every day. it's as if the scene has no standards for size and quality
anymore.

i downloaded the sample of that near 2gb 720p one and it was terrible quality for 720p, it was so
pixelated.

the scene rules for 720p releases are to use crf encoding with a value between 18 and 21, where
lower values mean better quality, and to strive towards quality over speed and size. this means, using
the lowest possible bitrate for a specific visual quality target. unfortunately cable and satellite tv
providers now use avc encoded video to distribute to the broadcast stations (which air in mpeg2-ts)
causing quality loss or do weird frame rate conversions to reduce airtime for allowing more ads.
the scene group immerse is famous for releases with broken ictv (bad stream captures) because of
the bad cable providers they use (they record in philadelphia, new york and chicago) and don't actively
check anything before release (that's why they're
so fast).

there have also been many issues with broadcasters (mostly pay-tv and premium cable, which is even
worse) causing the semi-automated recording and transcoding systems to fail more often than they
used to. main contenders are showtime (broadcasts out-of-sync from time to time), abc (framerate
compression for more ads), cw, ctv, cbs, nbc (provides or uses bad avc encoded broadcast
sources or doesn't deblock properly before packaging in mpeg2-ts), showcase (airs the wrong show
or an old episode instead of the real one that was assigned the slot, broadcast glitches with missing
picture or sound for several seconds).

hey, maybe you don't understand it, but he does explain why 720p releases sometimes look bad.

my guess is demondiablo probably does understand a lot of it, i understand parts of it. dd probably
cut the rest back to blah blah blah in order to make the post much smaller. but thanks for the info
nightmarejoker2, i might not completely understand what you put, but i get the general idea behind it.
