been watching this on netflix. it's not bad! it's certainly not going to win any awards for originality, but it's
at least a slightly different take on the same old tropes, and some of the characters are interesting... plus
famke janssen.... oh my.

thanks, but isn't that what our show information page is for 😛 http://eztv.it/shows/831/hemlock-grove/
it would be different if there was no show info page...then i would be thanking you

i was considering this, but apparently avclub gave the season an f. i've been trying to tone down the
amount of cheese/camp i watch, so i guess i'll go with house of cards instead.
no, not "avclub", rather, it was one writer/contributor at avclub, zack handlen. the "f" is not based
on the results of a panel or group of people, it's one man's opinion piece. zack handlen also speaks
very poorly (bashing) of "house of cards", which on the same site, by another writer/contributor
received a "b" rating, and twenty-nine thousands imdb users gave "house of cards" a 8.9/10 weighted
average, 9.0/10 arithmetic mean, & 9.0/10 median. hemlock grove on imdb has received, so far, only
1586 user ratings, with 7.3 weighted average, 7.7 arithmetic mean, & 8.0 median. so, is zack right
about hemlock grove, and serioiusly wrong about house of cards, or wrong about both? well, that
depends. bring up his profile on the site, then click on "articles by zack_handlen" and see how he has
rated other shows, are they shows that you've seen and do you agree or disagree with him more often
then not. you can also check out the 29 written imdb user reviews for this show...check the profiles of
a few people who rated it high and the profile a few people who rated it low, do they like the same
genres as you, do they generally score shows the same way you would, see who you agree or disagree
with more often.
also, zack handlen's mostly negative critique of netflix is lacking facts, it's a fluff opinion piece.
i'm just saying, you may not be able to judge whether or not you would like this show
based on that one person's "f" rating at avclub.
this show may turn out to be crap, or it migh be something you'd really enjoy.
i probably won't watch it until all episodes are available as torrent (either here or on tpb), and after
i've checked to see what my favorite users (the people i agree with most often) on imdb have to say
and how they scored it.
wow- netflix is really hit or miss. house of cards and... whatever this is.
house of cards is top sshelf all around and this seems amateurish - like a straight to video film or
a syfy orig movie.
the best word i can think of for this is hokey - or maybe cartoonish.
what i decided it reminds me of is goosebumps - the show based on rl stine books.
i wonder if the source for this is aimed at kids (like twilight) or at adults (like the sookie
stackhouse books). i assume it's the former.
apart from the script, the rest isn't too bad. the production values are excellent. the camera work
is weird - for some reason there's a deep yellow filter on a number of scenes. the cast is
mediocre. the second generation of characters is supposed to be in h.s. but they all look 24-28.
aaron douglas (from bsg) and lili taylor are a welcome presence, but famke janssen and dougray scott
are surprisingly bad- really wince inducing.
janssen has been remarkably good in other projects; she's definitely got talent. my hope for the
show is that her really bad british accent and outrageous overacting -combined with the schlocky
writing- are a clue that the show may be going somewhere interesting: it's entirely possible that
the first episode was mostly intended as exposition and that once the premise and characters are
established, subsequent eps will make it clear that this is a parody - played straight, but intended
to be funny.
so, is zack right
about hemlock grove, and serioiusly wrong about house of cards, or wrong about both?
i'm just saying, you may not be able to judge whether or not you would like this show
based on that one person's "f" rating at avclub.
my take (in detail above) is that unless this is subtle humor, the f is appropriate.
as straight genre, the gates (2010) was far better than this.
why the fellow didn't like hoc, i don't know. it was great - not quite as good as s01 of boss (truly
exceptional), but definitely better than s02..
i just finished ep 2. i guess they're not making a comedy. i was hoping for parody and not just of
the 'twilight/vampire diaries' phenom, but the 50's & 60's gothic horror films: the period after the
expressionist influenced pre-war b&w classics, but before the rise of self-referential 'in on the
joke' campy horror and the gore of 'splatterfest' films. think hammer films with christopher lee
and/or peter cushing as well as any horror with vincent price before he started sending up his own
image in the 70s with dr phibes. if those characters were taken out of their original films and
made into the protagonists of a prime time soap opera like falcon crest or melrose place and played
completely deadpan (definitely no laugh lines), i'd watch it.
come to think of it, that sounds like dark shadows, which i've only seen clips from. i guess that's
the formula i was hoping the creators of this show were following. nope. it looks like they were
just trying to replicate the success of true blood, and were unable to pull it off.
1) unlike vamp diaries and twilight, this book wasn't originally juv. lit. according to wsj, the
novel is "packed with literary and philosophical allusions... early reviews have compared mr.
mcgreevy to jonathan franzen." (it's published by farrar, straus and giroux for chrisake!) why are
the characters like something from goosebumps? it's weird that the show has only caricatures were
characters should be. wtf?
2) in the second ep, i initially missed something important. the rich kid has a "rendezvous" with a
classmate. when he's sizing her up, the camera shows her long bare legs as she's sitting at her desk
and then her foot shaking her shoe up and down. the shoe is a loud rainbow covered affair and it's
moving. all the same what you're supposed to notice is a tampon peeking out of the top of her
handbag on the floor. that's vital to understanding the following scene, but the foot and shoe is
what caught my eye. i ignored the white plastic cylinder at first assuming it was a marker or a pen.
(she's in class after all.)
3) my favorite things about the show so far bookend the 2nd ep. (skip the 45 minutes in between.)
the title sequence at the beginning is really visually interesting and fun to look at. the last 3
minutes at the end feature some cool visual effects. it's a really great transformation scene -
maybe not american werewolf in london great but pretty awesome. it ends with a gorgeous wolf (or
more likely a wolf/husky or wolf/malamute hybrid) eating a bunch of deli sliced ham.
4) the accents are annoying. roman is supposedly a lifelong resident of a pennsylvania steel town,
but he sounds like the star of a bergman film. he should have either no accent (aka midwestern
standard - like penn native david boreanz) or a philly accent like joey lawrence or chris matthews.
he shouldn't sound scandinavian. if someone was going to have an accent, it's the romani kid, but
he has none. famke janssen has a silly british accent. her husband said her purported family was
completely made up. is her accent supposed to sound phony?
ps: they showed something really briefly on famke's back. was it supposed to be a scar or a little
puddle of ejaculate? it was so quick i couldn't tell.
anyone know if the smaller files will come here? or just the 720s?
eztv would prefer the sd (standard definition) smaller file sizes, but so far the scene has only
released the 720 and i do not know if they will be releaseing in sd. sometimes, though not often, the
scene will do only the 720... later a non-scene or independent group or person(s) will transcode or re-
encode(terminology?) to a lower resolution and smaller file size...which can usually be found on tpb
(http://thepiratebay.se/) . eztv only torrents scene releases. (exceptions: mvgroup, new games plus,
the sci fi guys, and vodo.)
when using tpb, i strongly suggest downloading from a vip or trusted member...the ones with a green
or pink skull icon. also, read the user comments to see if there are any issues with the torrent.
