dude this is either a total rip off or an american version of a bbc 3 comedy show called white van man (as
its a sterotype that handymen use white vans in the uk).
the plot seems identical except adding in two more characters to make it revolve more around the family.

well bbc 3 cancelled white van man after two seasons of 6 episodes each so things look good for the
future of this show! and yeah.. the original sucked.

hate to burst your bubble, but everything is a rip off of a rip off of a rip off. there hasn't been an original
idea in tv since the 80s. everything's been done before. that being said, it's your choice to follow the un-
original series of your desire.

ps: "family tools is an american sitcom that airs on abc. the series, created by bobby bowman, is
produced by mark gordon, abc studios and itv studios america. it is based on the british sitcom white
van man, which was produced by itv studios america's parent company itv studios, and whose creator,
adrian poynton, is also a co-creator and producer of the american version." <-- wiki

have to agree with the feeling that this generally sucks. i really wanted to like it b/c it has a lot of actors i
like in it, but just like with several other british shows, this doesn't translate well across the pond (just like
the us versions of skins and being human, only exception to the rule seems to be the office). it really
seems to be trying to hard to be funny like raising hope (like the music use in the show) or my name is
earl, the black sidekick character seems a lot like crab man, but just isn't good at all. i guess this was
abcs attempt at doing more comedies like fox or nbc, but the network should stick to what it's good at
modern family and dramas.

white van man didn't suck, it just wasn't the pinnacle of british comedy, just like most comedies that the
uk brings out these days (the spa, the mimic, heading out, to name a few recent ones).

the sad fact is that since the success of the office, americans think they can just copy a show from the uk
(or australia), and it will work. instead they almost never succeed, and the office was just a happy
accident. i mean, look at the us version of the inbetweeners, that show was horrible!

>only exception to the rule seems to be the office

and shameless

and, i'm sure, a few others that i don't have from the top of my head.
british comedy isn't some sort of sophisticated highbrow entertainment, and hasn't been so for years if not
decades. dull stuff like "heading out" is a great example, as is "vicious", which is the worst pilot i watched
this season. it looked like stereotypes gathered and wrote an ironic script about what other stereotypes
think of their stereotype.
it's like if dave chapelle wore blackface over whiteface and made a show about jive-talking, louisiana
voodoo, crack and fried chicken. on the second thought, a genius like dave just might have pulled this off.
sadly, there were no comedic geniuses here

bit i digress on the whole british comedy thing

the show in question was kind of, okay, i guess. but i've seen too many recent okay pilots that got really
stale and all over tha place in the very second episode, so i'll give this 2-3 episodes to see if it holds
together.

yes it is. it states this during the end credits.

this is one pathetic miserable show. white van man is far superior in many ways.

i had heard a lot of praise about the inbetweeners (uk), so i recently downloaded it/watched it. and i
know people will hate me for saying it.. but it sucked. i think will mckenzie being such a "prat" ruined
the concept for me.

not true, there have been several, in every decade. or have you not seen "breaking
bad," to name just one.

i have, love the show, very similar to "weeds" though.

however, maybe you were referring not to the idea, but formula. there's just a couple
handfuls of formulae for tv, and we are due soon for a new one (ghod, i hope). if that's what you are
referring to, i do agree.
but, about 95% or so of tv in recent years has been nothing but remakes from other tv or movies, and
most even just complete rip-offs of the most recent things.

yes, pardon, formula is what i meant.

as an example, almost every sympathetic vampire show, in the last four decades,
has been nothing but remixes of dark shadows and anne rice stuff. hell, and those were just re-
formulations of earlier works, back to the 19th century.

i wouldn't include angel or buffy the vampire slayer in that analysis.. but i guess it's not exclusively a
drama either.

thing is, if someone would just go to the fictional works of about 100 different top-
notch authors, there'd be lots of stuff to work from, if the creative (not corporate) people were given
loose reins.

i know joss whedon and kevin smith have two clans of people; people that hate them and people that
love them. but i consider them both to be "out of the box" thinkers/creators that usually bring a fresh
perspective to their works.
