if you're gonna take on another detective/police genre show, it's most likely better
with character and texture coming from europe and the uk.
i don't know if i'd agree. frankly, i'm just as bored of london as a setting as i am new york or l.a.
anything other than those three can make it more interesting, whether it's in the u.s. or not. for
example justified and longmire are better because of their settings.
i'm not sure if it is the setting that makes a show watchable or not. often, the acting isn't really all that top
notch and it works out for a decent show. with justified and longmire, it seems like it is the plot that
gets you hooked and keeps you on the line. the setting for a show isn't what is worn out for me. it's
those predictable plots rehashed over and over again.
hmmm. i guess what i'm thinking is that for justified and longmire the protagonists couldn't be ny
cops (or la or london cops). what makes them different and interesting is inextricably linked to
their being characters from a part of the country that's not usually the focus of tv shows.
the shows that i've gotten bored with tend to have cops as main characters who are more or less
interchangeable. in fact, i think some characters actually have switched from amongst dick wolf's
shows and the zuiker shows. while some people will disagree strongly with me about this, i don't
think that the bbc cop shows that have a contemporary setting do much better at this than the
american ones.
that's not to say that you can't have interesting leads and by extension good stories with cops in
those settings (certainly andy sipowicz and jane tennison were interesting) and having an atypical
setting doesn't make a show interesting if the writing isn't there (eg, killer women and chase) -
but protagonists who're different because they're of and from a different setting give you a head
start by at least avoiding having cookie cutter detectives in the lead.
since longmire and justified are both u.s. shows not set in ny (or la or chicago), i thought
about what shows are more interesting because they're not in london. the first ones i thought of
were single handed and hinterland.

then there's broadchurch and george gently. all together they're a bit cliche "city cop to small town",
which makes hot fuzz a bit prophetic, or it's an old trend and i'm just not familiar with much pre-'05 british
drama.
also, big cities can still be interesting, as with prey and hunted.
