the network has announced that the first season will be split into two parts. part one will end with
the 8th episode; part two will resume in the spring. the show has already been renewed for a second
season of similar length, but also likely split in two.

yep. split (contractual) seasons are becoming more and more common.
surprising renewal came less than a week after the first episode premiered.
on august 15, 2014, starz renewed the series for a second season.
