this show is great, i've watching the australian version and my sides were
splitting, highly recommended

well this show is indeed great when it comes to the austrlian one!!!
1/the us comedians don't have a great talent for impro
2/80% of the show is just a total rip of from the aussie version
for exemple the scene where you get introduced to the father or the party gone
bad or or or etc....

too bad i think they could have taken the opportunity to make the show original
(at least new scenes) -_-###

maybe they figured nobody in america would have ever seen the australian version
so it wouldn't matter. i know i haven't seen it. got a few torrent links to the
episodes i could take a look at?

as an aussie i'm kind of surprised at you accusing the u.s of stealing from us.

they stole "thank god your here"

what about us, we've stolen:

big brother, dancing with the stars, the price is right, catch phrase, wheel of
fortune, deal or no deal, who wants to be a millionaire, etc etc....
[#29306] Written by: lunatik [17/04/2007, 08:40]
its harldy stealing, when its been done by the excact same people.

the scenes are probably the same due to this reason and they know they worked
in aus.

i do agree that the aussie starts are way better that the american
counterparts.

and dancing with the starts was stolen from the uk not the us

the difference is that thank god you're here is good!

but seriously, the aussie version of this show totally rocks, i haven't
finished getting the first american episode yet, but if it's anything like the
aus version, it's worth having a look at!

yeah, the aussie boys behind thank god you're here have sold the syndicate
rights in america. totally cleaned up on that one. good on them i say. i'm
looking forward to downloading the american shows - i hope they're as funny as
our aussie ones!

i cant wait for the aussie version to return its awesome

(deal or no deal originated from neverlands)
australia was the second to adopt

well let me say why we so called "stole" it from you and changed the people
doing it
aussie accents are and can be annoying (not all but alot), all of your humor
wont translate to well for all americans, ive tried to watch some aussie tv
shows and i can say i dont understand all of whats going on, also what if we
just bought the exact same shows that aired in australia and showed them here?
they would have been on comedy central instead of a major network and thats
call syndication, also now we get to see failed/successfull american actors
look foolish

but i say if the guys who made the show sold the rights, good for them they
probably made a pretty penny which is good for aussie's because maybe they
will make something else you guys will like with the money

if you already seen these shows in australia save your bandwidth, so shut up
with all the stole this crap, i liked the first show i watched
and with all the stuff on american tv its not a guarentee that this will make
it past the first run of ordered shows

i mean are you smarter then a 5th grader is a hit ive heard, but i cant stand
that rip off of a howard stern radio bit, and i want jeff foxworthy to fail
because he took a good show (blue collar tv) and turned it into shit by
changing it and putting it on the crappy country music station

/rant off

wrap your frail little narrow minds around this...

a show is never 'stolen', but bought. thinking up a show and selling the
concept to other countries is big bussiness. shows like american idol, deal or
no deal and wheel of fortune are passed to broadcasters in other countries for
litteraly millions of dollars! so it's hardly stealing.

by the by, this show is getting better. i really enjoyed this episode. three
of the actors were actually funny (all except the woman) which can not be said
for the first two episodes. the succes of the show lies in the actors they
have, not the concept.

i'm in aus, and although i haven't watched this episode yet, my thoughts on the
us version.

the us "pilot" episode had me cringing at the outset, due to the
audience "whoot whoot" that's so prevalent on american audience shows.
presumably this was to hype it up to the network buyers, because thankfully it
was reduced by show 2.

the us version has more focus on the judge, dave foley. there's way too much
cutting to him during scenes for his reactions, and he's introduced to the
audience and takes a bow, waves etc. tom gleisner in the aus version is much
less of a "star".

although there is no group introduction/meeting of the performers chit chat
prior to the sketches in the us version, the dialogue between the host (grier?)
and the performer just prior to entering the door seems more scripted than the
off the cuff banter/rapid comeback lines of shane bourne and the performers
during their group introduction in the aus version. the aus chit chat is much
more natural, lees forced.

finally on the production side, the editing of the us version was noticeably
jumpy in the group scenes. i would guess that each of the performers is given
the chance to respond to each question/situation, with only the "funniest" (and
sometimes i think that means most audience whoops rather than quality of wit)
making it through to the final show. which i suppose is why some performers
seem to dominate the group sketches.

however, if you concentrate on the performances of each improv player rather
than the show structure, it is very similar. it all comes down to the
peformer's ability. in aus, there are some performers who have an instant
response, very quick wit, ie micaleff, sampson both my favourites. also frank
woodley for his bizarre responses. then you have someone like fifi box, who
repeats the line just given to her while she thinks of a response, eg if
asked "so why are you dressed in a frog suit?", fifi box would reply "why am i
dressed in a frog suit? i'll tell you why i'm dressed in a frog suit. i'm
dressed in a frog suit becasue....", where someone like sampson wouild
answer "my pond's being cleaned, can i stay in your swimming pool?" instantly.
(note, i made those lines up to illustrate the point, so don't judge the wit of
performers by them).

i found the same with the us version, some players "have it" and some have
excruciating silence while fumbling for a line.

in both countries, some performers think that shouting can get them out of
trouble and make a line funnier. it doesn't. worse, is if they fall back on
a "shtick".

anyway, my point is that the "meat" of the show, the performances, will depend
on the performer. from the us show 1, wayne knight was excellent especially in
the group scene. from show 2, kevin (leland???, the mountain climber sketch)
also could fire off his lines naturally and quickly. i am very much looking
forward to seeing tom green.

at the other end of the scale, monique and jennifer coolidge really floundered
while coming up with responses, brian cranston "tried too hard" i think.

some of the shows you listed started off in the britain i think. for example
"who wants to be a millionaire" started in britain

pretty sure big brother and deal or no deal are sold to different tv stations
by a dutch company

deznaj: so "stolen" was the wrong word, i just get annoyed when we just buy
stuff and copy it all the time rather then come up with our own ideas. then i
see our shows, neighbors, the bill, 1 vs 100 and i understand why we buy so much
international t.v.

rather than rant how smart u are because you know they are bought, why not
just say the word u would use instead to explain a laziness to come up with
ideas and having to buy show ideas from other countries all the time.

so wrap your frail mind around this: most people in this thread knew what i
meant, you didn't.

brunin_gee: lol, what a typical american attitude, "if it's not the same as us,
we don't wanna know about it." letterman's a fantastic show, can't imagine not
watching it because of the accents.

you can't speak for a whole country, but i know what ur trying to say & the
movie "the castle" proved that our sense of humor is quite different to yours.
