Aussie Tv Wakes up

as an australian this is good news.
i will keep downloading my favourite shows off the internet however, until the
networks stop ruining the episodes by giving away plot details in their promotions.
i remember a long time ago back when the 2nd series of 24 was screening, channel
7 had the promotion "in this episode, jack bauer will die" killing all suspense
whatsoever.

i agree, great news indeed. however, is it going to stop them airing shows out
of order, or with repeats mid season, or moving them to ridiculous times of the
night??? i'm not so sure. aussie stations are slack. i think that i will
keep downloading until i'm sure that they have picked up their socks a bit.

mind you, it would help with my downloads. with such crap internet here, i am
getting throttled each and every month!!!

lmao.. i remember they started doing that with jericho..till it wasn't
convenient..they kept stuffing around so i went back to downloading.
as for 7's treatment of heroes..it doesn't qualify description..suffice to say
it's time the aussie stations shed their parochial attitudes & realise that
it's a brave new electronic age out there..fast broadband etc. it means they
can no longer treat their viewers like idiots ( example..how many gave up
trying to watch the gilmore girls ? you can buy the series on dvd..no ads..no
disjointed programming.. no on this week off for 2 cos the footy or something
is on). this kind of mess is nothing new... remember buffy ?... flogged like
hell in prime time then banished to the late evening at a whim.

let's face it..oz tv still sux.

don't even get me started on big brother ( did anyone warch that tripe ?)

yeah, interesting news, but still not enough to make me want to actually plug an
antenna into my tv.

i have zero faith in the networks here, they will try it for several weeks, and
then it will go the way of jericho.

the problem here is the show has to rate top 20 'every' week for a network to
even want to keep current with the show, and not jerk it around, consistent
average ratings are not good enough, if it's not top 5 material they just don't
care when it airs.

having said that, house may stand a chance, it's one of the few shows that has
had reliable top 20 ratings here, so could stand a chance of staying current.

other shows may pick up some ratings being shown sooner, but networks are
forgetting one of the more obvious problems, their own promotion and treatment
of these shows.

ads that give away whole plot lines, promotions that actually make zero sense,
or constantly saying 'x' will happen this episode, and then it just never does.
the actual way they promote and advertise shows here is part of what turns many
people to torrent sites, we just get sick of the hype, lies, constant
misdirection and confusion, it actually ruins the show.

of course with some shows it's about ad placement as well, the constant and
deliberate placement of ad breaks in the 'middle' of a scene, shows like house
etc don't do it, but shows like lost and i'm told heroes? (never watched it on
fta) are horrible like that, so why put up with it if you don't have to?

with shows like lost, it's also about how marginal the shows have become, to me
i can 'barely' stand watching it anymore, so throw in the local network hype
ads etc, and i actually can't watch it anymore.
but, if i get the torrent, no ads no hype and it now only wastes 40mins of my
life, so suddenly it's bearable again, but only just...

until its on demand airing i doudbt i'll be watching the box (for fta tv
anyways)...

yes dmfaust, thebishop74 (and others) are spot on about the way tv viewers are
treated by the networks in australia - with utter contempt. still, this change
is definitely going in the right direction. we will just have to see how the
networks handle it. here\'s hoping...

yeah i think its hilarious how shitty our australian networks are. it just
makes me think, how long would they have gone on treating us like utter shit
if we didn't have the internet and the means to raise a revolution via ratings?

answer: forever. they would've just kept us hanging on series that would air 2
or 3 years after they aired in the u.s. retarded. i'm glad the ratings are
falling and the networks are being forced to do this, and i hope it fails and
more and more people go to internet tv.

eztv, digitalhive, etc are godsends, i love watching hd episodes of lost,
heroes, the office etc whenever i want. and i'll avidly buy the dvd boxsets
when they come out here (.. *sigh* like 6 months after the u.s. versions come
out.)

anyway, fuck you oz network execs. you're retards, and all you do is shit out
generic dramas, cheap-as-all "count down" shows and american reality shows
with terrible australian v/o's so it counts as "aussie" content. lol. good one
oz.

echoing previous comments i think it's definitely a step in the right
direction... but i'm skeptical they'll hold to it, or they'll use this gimmick
to get people watching then announce a 'season finale' and take a break of six
months. also they're bound to do their usual "timeslot creep" when prior
(reality) shows run later and later which makes recording shows near impossible.

totally agreed imzadi. i don't even think they do have timeslots. its
disgusting but it shows the state of oz tv when i know more about us timeslots
like nbc's thursday night line-up or abc's wednesday with lost etc than i do
about australian shows.

i lost all faith in australian tv networks a long time ago. spoilers in episode
promos, schedule changes without warning, shows constantly running overtime,
channel 10\'s insistence that ad breaks start 5 seconds before the actual end of
a scene...shall i go on?
i doubt this will change my habits getting my favourite tv eps here - its just
far more convenient, i can watch what i want, when i want to, not when they say
its ok for me to watch.
the majority of tv shows i download, i\'ll buy the dvds -when they are finally
released- so the studios still get their cut.

before jericho, i remember channel 7 advertised that they were showing survivor
'straight off the satelite' .. but what they really did was show the first half
of episode 1 and then the second half a week later. so they ended up a week late
for the rest of the season (and probably took a mid-season break too .. i don't
watch it, just heard the uproar)

i can't imagine that this will hold up for more than a few weeks. we'll all
continue to download until we're sure they're really doing it right. but by the
time that happens, they'll change their mind again and we'll all continue to
download.

surely there will come a time soon when you can purchase individual
shows/episodes legally across the 'net and get an hd download legally, bypassing
the networks.

while i think it's great news for the torrent-impaired, i'm going to keep
dling the shows. mainly because i hate ads and can never remember what day it
is. interesting news, though.

this won't change things for me. tv has been revolutionised for me. living in
country wa i get bad reception and we only have win and gwn (as well as sbs and
abc of course) which are a compromise at best since they comnbine channels, so
we never get everything.

even if i was in perth or another city, i would still prefer to download tv
shows now. the revolution for me is that i can watch my shows the day after they
air in the us, have no pesky adverts and the quality is much better too.

who cares what the tv networks in australia do? i will never go back to
watching television in any way shape or form. tv is dead and hopefully i will
be when the imperialist scum finally start to put the screws on media content
flow on the internet.
