elton john stopped being gay in the late nineties

really?

gonads90 actually said, "ben elton stopped being funny in the late nineties"

one is a str8t? comedian and the other a very gay singer/musician.
there must be a joke in there somewhere...but i don't get it.
guess it got lost in translation.

benjamin charles "ben" elton (born 3 may 1959) is an english comedian, author, playwright, actor and
director. he was the leader of the british alternative comedy movement of the 1980s, as a writer on
such cult series as the young ones and blackadder, as well as also a successful stand-up comedian on
stage and tv.

elton john, super gay then and is super gay now 😉
ok, i'm off to play me some ej.... yellow brick road & rocketman

what more do you want? we gave you so many good things and all* we get back
is cagney and lacey and 50 versions of csi ...

srsly?
cagney and lacey?
were you writing as a character from the americans,
bc that's totally a reagan era reference?
[or thatcher era from another pov]

i honestly don't know what you're on about. u.s. tv is producing a ton of good shows right now.
walking dead, the americans, mad men, hell on wheels and breaking bad - that's five good shows from
just one channel! i could easily get to 20 good u.s. shows. other than utopia and to a lesser
degree in the flesh and black mirror, i haven't found the current british shows very appealing at all.

granted, there are a lot of csi-ish shows on american tv, sure- but that misses the point. why focus
on unimaginative genre fare (dr, lawyer & cop) that you don't like instead of the good stuff?
there's always dreck. the measure of the quality of entertainment at a given point in time is not
whether you can find crap, but how hard it is to find gold. moreover i don't understand using the
'genre fare' criticism as a way to knock american tv vs british. it seems to me there's about the
same proportion of shows about inspector x as about detective y.

as to comedy in particular...
i found two of the britcoms ppl mentioned as examples of good shows to be barely funny at all:
plebes (basically a live action flinstones movie without rick moranis) and life's too short which i
thought crossed the line between un-pc and offensive. this may just be a weak time for comedy. it
seems a bit cyclical. i only watch 4 sitcoms now: mod family and the middle regularly with cougar
town & new girl semi-regularly.

ps: i was hoping this would turn out to be about two brothers repairing bicycles who dreamed they
could fly - think da vinci's demons except funny rather than a faux spooky mystery.
