review: mixed bag
the performances are unremarkable -
not especially good, but not noteworthy for being bad. workmanlike.
the production values are splendid at evoking
a gothic vision of victorian england consistent with stoker.
the soundtrack is awful, and both the fight and
combat training scenes were laughable.
the premise is intriguing. it's not f. w. murnau or bela lugosi,
but the league of extraordinarily gentlemen.
so far, rhys-meyers hasn't done anything unusual
with the character other than to wear a mustache
and adopt a dodgy faux american accent.
fortunately, the latter is accounted for in the script
and is probably intentionally bad.
so far it's not nearly as much fun as true blood or buffy/angel,
but it's much more engaging than
the vapid teen vamp of twilight or vampire diaries.
it's not as original as the netflix offering, hemlock grove,
but that show (while daring) was execrable in execution.
i'm hoping nbc embraces the alan moore
'from hell' & 'league' elements rather than
getting bogged down in dramatically inert spectacle
like the coppola adaptation.
i'll continue watching for at least another 3 eps
to see how it progresses.

i must be sounding like an ungrateful sob, but...
i like supernatural, fantasy, sci-fi etc., so i was waiting for this. finally - it's here...
downloading ... waiting ... yes!
and the quality was rather (d'oh!!!) crap - i don't know whether this is cramming it too tight (244
mb), or telecast was not hd. anyway, i almost never had an issue (video quality) with lol's
torrents, so i am rather taken aback.
i am downloading 720p version (dimension, pb) - to see wdf.
i still thank you for hundreds of tv show eps i have downloaded from you - grateful forever.
some time later - 720p was ok (855 m), but lol's torrents are usually almost as good. i hope that
next episode will come out better...

i'd add ultraviolet ,the 1998 tv mini-series starring idris elba & jack davenport,the best vampire show i
have seen on tv.

btw via googling the 1998 series, i learned that there was an anime
spinoff of the 2006 jovavich film ultraviolet. anyone seen it?
some anime i like (usually the sf), but more often i don't. opinions?
